Fun With Appliqués!

My oldest daughter is head over heels in love with owls right now.  I'm not sure where her sudden craze came from but it does seem to be all the rage.  They are so popular right now that I have found many great projects to try out.  I do have to admit they are pretty darn cute!
Some of my latest projects have been discovering new applique techniques.  In my past sewing experience I've been a little type A.  Sticking to exactly what a pattern directs you to do.  It has been very freeing to go out of my comfort zone and try new things.  I've found I'm really enjoying appliqueing on outfits for my girls to turn a boring shirt into something fun and original.  They really are fairly simple and easy to make.  First I found an owl picture and then cut out the pieces of the owl.  Then picked out some complementing fabrics and cut out the pieces.  Next assemble them on the fabric you will be sewing them on to find out which pieces need to be sown on first. The pieces in the background such as the owl wings and feet were sewn on first then each layer added in succession.   To finish it off I added some button eyes and ta da a work of art.
